Hiking Without Supervision

Tales from the trail (aka Senior Moments)

Day 15, April 26: Who is We?

I have been asked by a couple of people: who is We? We is me and major PITA Murray Montgomery.

My long-suffering hubby DB is knee deep in California taxes, so still at home in Texas. But, his idea of fun is a new PR on his Peloton, or a drive out to the winery in his Porche with the top down. Not hiking for 1,111.1 miles in crap weather in the UK. (Although him and his friend Eric have agreed to come do the Pennine Way with us.)

So enter an old school chum from Dundee, Murray, who enjoys a long walk. Now Murray is a grumpy old bastard (GOB) who has an opinion about all things. Some very interesting, some he should keep to himself. But as a walking partner he keeps me entertained with his banter. For example, today we reached a gate that had nothing but mud on the other side. I thought it was nice that someone had tried to cover some of it with straw. Murray’s take, “it wasnae any o’ these farmer bastards”. How dare these fn farmers allow us to cross their fields and not control their coos to not make a mess at the gate – or words to that affect.

So We is me and the GOB called Murray. 😴

He got a good laugh on my behalf today though. We took a left when it should have been a right and had to climb up through a field. The gate seemed to be bolted closed to me, so I took off my pack, handed over my poles, and climbed over the fence. Murray passed over the poles and pack, and then opened the gate. I don’t know how the f$$k he did that but he had a good laugh at my expense. Glad I can entertain him!

All in all the day was easy. Lots of fields, woodlands, country lanes, and wonderful views. Still some B-hills but manageable.
