Hiking Without Supervision

Tales from the trail (aka Senior Moments)

The Pennines, May 18

We started the day right with a full English breakfast and coffee. Met John, another hiker who was 6 foot 8 inches tall, wow. We met him many times along the way and the guys all became friendly. The day started off sunny as we wandered through some fields and then climbed Jacob’s Ladder. It was really hard going and a sample of what was to come. We saw some very friendly sheep, had a long, fast walk across the flagstones which allowed Eric to stretch. I had been holding him up all day with all the hills and was really messing with his walking stats 🤩. (Many days had flagstones across the worst boggy bits, thank goodness. A person could disappear into one of those bogs.)

As the day went on, we decided to take a side path thinking it might be faster to where our accommodation was, but it was total rocky, muddy, higgledy-piggledy, torture. We dodged mud holes for quite a while and totally tested out the waterproofness of our hiking shoes. Eric of course washed off in the stream since he hikes in sandals (made me wish I was wearing mine). We stayed at a place called Windy Harbor, where I had an adult beverage and then fell down exhausted. The guys of course closed down the bar since they ran into John and Eric got him tipsy.

  1. Glad to hear from you and see that Dennis made it..all smiles..I was getting worried.
