Hiking Without Supervision

Tales from the trail (aka Senior Moments)

Day 8, April 19: Grateful for Monotony

Weather Report: Damp, Overcast, with a chance of being grumpy.

Every morning we start with a climb up a bastard hill. Why is that? This morning was no different, up a hill to the Great Western Canal. It was a little exciting to find that the canal went much further than we originally thought. Flat is good!

The canal walk was really interesting with historical posters all along the way, and lots of great photo ops, loads of ducks, ducklings, and swans.

At one point we got buzzed by what looked like a World War II bomber. It came so low we thought it was going to crash. I couldn’t get my phone out quick enough so only got the tail end of it.

Murray was a happy camper when we finally saw the sign for Pubs (plural, although we stopped in the first one). The first one we came to was The Globe Inn in Samford Peverell, where we had a much needed lunch and replenishment. Also gave me a chance to re-tape my pinkie toe… gonna be a problem there.

The canal was full of life but after the several miles it became monotonous – long and straight. However, the flat trail was welcomed. After 13 miles on the canal we came to a dead end. No idea which direction to go in. There was a sign saying Public Footpath but it didn’t really go anywhere, so we trudged through a field to get to a road. The rationale was to take the country roads rather than try to cross the fields.

For small country roads, there is a lot going on, so not the best decision for the day. But, we made it to our destination and managed to log a hefty 17 miles.

That plane is a C-130. My friend, Ken MacLennan, used to fly them out of RAF Lyneham back in the day. Loving the blog! This is fantastic stuff!
